When adding either files or images to media library, you will be asked to enter localized tags in order to help organize those files for later use. In addition to proper naming, tagging your files and images in a logical way will help you find them again later, either for reuse or deletion (if a photo or file becomes outdated).
When tagging an image or file, it's best to think of tags from general to specific in order to properly group items.
Using this image for example, there are numerous tags that could be of use, and starting with more general terms, we could begin with:
- City Campus
- Buildings
- Aerial
To get more specific, all the focal buildings and specific spaces shown in the photo could be listed, as well as the season that the image was taken:
- Kaufman Hall
- College of Business
- Broyhill Fountain
- Meier Commons Green Space
- Summer
If at all possible, any file being added to your site should be created as a page or a webform for accessibility and readability. If you absolutely must upload a file, using a tag to describe its type is best as a base tag. For instance, it could be one or several of:
- Documentation
- Meeting Notes
- Agenda
- Application
- Policy
- Organization Chart
- Annual Report
Additionally, tags for date (especially if it's a file that might be replaced in the future), audience (faculty and / or staff and / or students), and any other specific terminology would be helpful for organization.
Once tags are created, they will be added and given an internal Media Library number. When adding new tags, be sure to not add tags that are so similar that associated images will get split into different categories (for instance, don't add a tag for both "student" and "students").
